Usage of 16X DVD-RAM disc (RAM2 disc)
Hardware

  • Fujistu LifeBook
  • Fujistu Stylistic
  • DVD-RAM 2.0 disc (16x speed DVD-RAM)
  • Toshiba optical drive

Solution

DVD Forum* has introduced DVD-RAM2, a DVD-RAM format. The DVD-RAM2 disc, called the RAM2 disc, was released to markets in Spring 2006.

The RAM2 disc is not compatible with optical drives which do not support DVD-RAM2 format, i.e., the optical drive will not be able to access the RAM2 disc if it is inserted into the optical drive. To playback or record data on the RAM2 disc, you have to use an optical drive that supports DVD-RAM2 format. Such optical drives will have the following RAM2 logo:

Image of RAM2 logo

Please do not use RAM2 disc with your computer if you cannot find RAM2 logo on the optical drive. Always check the format of the disc before you purchase it or put it into your optical drive.

Caution

The following incidents may happen if you put RAM2 disc into the optical drive of your Fujitsu computer which does not bear RAM2 logo:

  • DVD tray may eject automatically and the RAM2 disc may spin for a while.
  • Your computer may stop responding.
  • DVD tray may fail to eject when you press the Load/Eject button.

How to recover from the above incidents

If any of the above incidents happen, please follow the instructions below to remove the RAM2 disc from the optical drive.

  • Press the power button or main switch to turn off the computer. Please read carefully the details of this procedure in the user’s manual of your computer.
  • In the event that the DVD tray is ejected, remove the RAM2 disc from it after the RAM2 disc has stopped spinning.
On the other hand, if the DVD tray is not ejected, insert a long and narrow tip into the hole near the Load/Eject button of the DVD tray to draw out the tray. Remove the RAM2 disc from the tray after the RAM2 disc has stopped spinning. If you cannot find the hole on the tray, press the power button to restart your computer and immediately press the Load/Eject button (this must be done within 5 seconds) to draw out the DVD tray. Remove the RAM2 disc from the tray after the RAM2 disc has stopped spinning. Please read carefully the details of this procedure in the user’s manual of your computer.

Please note that when a RAM2 disc is spinning in an ejected DVD tray, do not touch it or attempt to remove it from the tray. Always wait for the RAM2 disc to stop spinning before removing it from the tray. If you touch or attempt to remove a spinning RAM2 disc in the ejected tray, you may injure your hand and fingers.

These incidents may occur if your Fujitsu computer is equipped with certain Toshiba optical drives. Fujitsu computers equipped with Toshiba optical drives include the following models:

LifeBook C Series
C1320,
C2110, C2010, C2111, C2210, C2220, C2310, C2320, C2330,

Recommendations

If you have any of the above Fujitsu computers, we recommend that you download the Firmware Update Tool. This Firmware Update Tool will automatically check the possibility of the above incidents occurring based on the type of DVD optical drive of your computer, and will upgrade the optical drive firmware if applicable.

Please note, however, that the upgraded firmware does not make the optical drive compliant to DVD-RAM2 standard, nor does it make the optical drive compatible with RAM2 disc. The upgraded firmware can help to prevent the occurrence of the above incidents when a RAM2 disc is put into your computer DVD optical drive.

Download and run the Firmware Update Tool.

Download and carefully read the detailed firmware upgrade procedure.

My computer is shutting down sixty seconds after I connect to the internet with a "RPC DCOM" message. Do I have a virus?

It is possible your computer has been infected by what is called the "W32.Blaster.Worm". This is a virus-like program which began high circulation on Monday August 11, 2003. The worm can cause your computer to shutdown after connecting to the internet and other intermittent problems.

To clean the computer or to stop from being infected, Fujitsu recommends you take the following actions:

  1. Update Windows with one of the following methods: (both options install the same files)
    1. Use Windows Update; install all Critical Updates and Service Packs.
    2. Download and install the Security Update issued by Microsoft in Security Bulletin MS03-026 and Knowledgebase Article 823980.
  2. Confirm the Hotfix is installed by opening Add or Remove Programs from the Control Panel. Verify "Windows XP Hotfix - KB823980" is in the list of currently installed programs.
  3. Clean the computer with the Symantec W32.Blaster.Worm Removal Tool.

These instructions are correct to the best knowledge of Fujitsu PC at the time of publication. The links to websites outside of Fujitsu's control are subject to change. Using Windows Update and Anti-Virus software is the recommended way to prevent malicious software attacks.

My LAN connection is missing when I boot up my computer on battery without the cable connected, how do I correct this?

Solution: By default, the LAN controller is disabled on battery if the cable is not attached during boot. This is true even if the AC power is later plugged in.
To change this behavior, boot to the BIOS Setup by pressing F2 at the Fujitsu logo screen. Navigate to Advanced, Internal Device Configurations and change the LAN Controller setting from "Auto" to "Enabled". Press F10 to save your changes and reboot.
The LAN Connection will now be available on battery always.
Please note battery life may diminish in proportion to the amount of network traffic. Without traffic, power consumption by the card will be minimal.

I recently downloaded and installed the Microsoft Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) patch (Q815485) and am no longer able to connect wirelessly.

The Q815485 patch was issued for users running Windows XP operating systems on their computers. Some users found that installing the patch caused them to lose the ability to connect to their wireless LANs. (Note: The problem affected only users with an Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 LAN Mini-PCI adapter with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security features enabled.) Microsoft and Intel are aware of this issue, and are working towards a resolution.

In the meantime, you will need to uninstall the Q815485 patch. To do so, follow the procedure below:
1. Click the <Start> button, then click the Control Panel icon to open it.
2. Double-click Add and Remove Programs.
3. Once the list of installed programs appears, scroll down the list until you see Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q815485. Click on it.
4. Click on the <Change/Remove> button. When you are asked whether you really want to remove the program, click <Yes>.
5. When a message appears telling you the uninstall is complete, click <OK>.

I seem to have a problem with Suspend Mode on my Fujitsu LifeBook. Whenever my system goes into Suspend Mode, the unit will not come out of Suspend. How can I fix this issue?

Solution: Update your McAfee.com virus protection software
When you purchased your notebook, McAfee.com virus protection software had been pre-installed. Recently, it was discovered
that the McAfee.com software may cause unexpected results when entering or exiting suspend mode. This
anomaly could affect your system's overall battery life by interfering with your preferred power settings.

To ensure that you do not encounter the anomaly detailed above, be sure to disable the automatic update feature, as
detailed below.

Fujitsu wants you to get the most out of your LifeBook notebook. With this in mind we strongly recommend that you
perform this procedure. Failure to do so may impact the battery life that your preferred power conservation settings can
deliver.

Disable the automatic update feature:
1. Turn on the system and click Start. Click Programs (Windows 2000) or All Programs (Windows XP), depending
upon your operating system).
2. Select Accessories -> System Tools -> Scheduled Tasks.
3. Double-click on McAfee.com Update Check.
4. Select the Task tab if it is not already selected. Uncheck the "Enabled (scheduled task runs at specified time)"
checkbox.
5. Click [Apply], and then click [OK].

NOTE: In the future, you can check for updates by double-clicking the McAfee.com icon in the system tray at the
bottom right of the widow. When the McAfee.com Security Center window appears, click the Updates icon. Click
[Check Now]. The system will dial up McAfee.com. Follow the instructions on the screen to download the update. Note
that prior to downloading the update, you will be required to register your software with McAfee.com.

Where is the back up of my original software on my LifeBook B2175, E6541, E6557, i4187, i4190, and S4546?

Fujitsu PC Corporation's (FPC) LifeBook notebooks incorporate many unique features that address customers' everyday computing needs. One such feature is PowerQuest's Drive Image Special Edition (DISE), a software recovery system installed standard in FPC's LifeBook B, i, S and E (Windows Me) Series. DISE provides a secure area directly on the user's hard drive where data can be backed up in an instant with just a click of the mouse without additional hardware or software. In the event of a system failure, the information can be retrieved to the original factory condition. Since DISE uses a separate, hidden partitioned hard drive to store this information, the Microsoft Explorer may report to have a smaller storage capacity than normal. DISE uses only excess space and will not hinder the performance of the unit.
