MIL-STD-810G is the Test Method Standard for Environmental Engineering Considerations and Laboratory Tests. Though created specifically for Department of Defense applications, the standard is widely used as a general requirement in other commercial areas such as Healthcare, Education, Manufacturing, and State and Local Governments.

What does it mean to achieve this standard?

Tests for MIL-STD-x establish uniform engineering and technical requirements for military-unique or substantially modified commercial processes, procedures, practices and methods. There are five types of defense standards: interface standards, design criteria standards, manufacturing process standards, standard practices, and test method standards. MIL-STD-810G is an example of the test method standards. The MIL-STD-810G test is customized by each company based on the projected challenges faced by the users of their products. Each of the 28 test methods outline a source of environmental stress and are analyzed on two levels: Non-Operational and Operational. The following areas have been approved by the strict MIL-STD-810G guidelines.


Use low pressure (altitude) tests to determine if products can withstand and/or operate in a low pressure environment and/or withstand rapid pressure changes.

Functional Shock

The purpose is to evaluate the physical and functional performance of a product likely to be exposed to mechanically induced shocks during its lifetime.

Low Temperature

Use low temperature tests to obtain data to help evaluate effects of low temperature conditions on product safety, integrity, and performance during storage, operation and manipulation.


The purpose of this method is to determine the resistance of the product to the effects of a warm, humid atmosphere.

High Temperature

Use high temperature tests to obtain data to help evaluate effects of high temperature conditions on product safety, integrity and performance.

Vehicle Vibration

Transportation vibration more severe than application environment. Transportation vibration levels are often more severe than application vibration levels for ground-based and some shipboard products.

Vibration, Integrity

The test procedures and guidance herein are adaptable to various test purposes including development, reliability, qualification, etc.

Vibration tests are performed to:

  • Develop products to function in and withstand the vibration exposures of a life cycle including synergistic effects of other environmental factors, the product duty cycle and maintenance.
  • Verify that the product will function in and withstandthe vibration exposures of a life cycle.

Transit Drop

The intent of this test is to determine the structural and functional integrity of the product to a transit drop either outside or in its transit or combination case. All tests are performed with a quick release hook or drop tester.

Blowing Dust

This test is performed to help evaluate the ability of the product to resist the effects of dust that may obstruct openings, penetrate into cracks, crevices, bearings, and joints, and to evaluate the effectiveness of filters.
