My Stylistic 500 does not have a pen. What other kind of pen can I use?

Can I copy Pen Services from one operating system to a different operating system or to a different pen tablet?
No, Pen Services is slightly different for each operating system and pen tablet.

Top of Page

Why is the cursor moving erratically? It was working fine before.
The batteries in your pen may be low. The Stylistic 500 pen requires three Model 393 silver oxide batteries. The Stylistic 1000, 1200, and 2300 pen requires a single AAAA-size alkaline battery. Both of these types of batteries can be found at most stores that carry camera or watch batteries.

Top of Page

Why doesn't the pen work any more? It was working fine a little while ago.
First, you need to determine if this is a hardware problem or a Windows driver problem. Check to see if the pen works on the hotpads at the edge of the screen (contrast, brightness, etc.), Also check to see if the pen can be used to start the BIOSSetup Utility by double-tapping on the screen during the boot process (note that the PenCentra doesn't have a BIOS SetupUtility).

If the pen works on the hotpads or in the BIOS Setup Utility, then the problem is probably with the Windows pen driver. Try reinstalling the pen driver -- instructions on reinstalling the pen driver can be found elsewhere in the list of FAQs. If that does not help, then contact your local help desk or reseller for more help, or contact FPC Technical Support for additional assistance.

If the pen does not work on the hotpads or in the BIOS Setup Utility, then it is most likely a hardware problem. If the pen is an "active" pen (shipped with the Stylistic 500, 1000, 1200, and 2300) then try the pen on another Fujitsu pen tablet that has the same model number as the one with the problem. If the pen works on the second tablet, then the original pen tablet probably needs to be repaired. Contact your local help desk or reseller for instructions for having the tablet repaired, or feel free to contact FPC Customer Support.

If the pen doesn't work on the second tablet, then try replacing the battery in the pen and replace the pen tip with a new one. Extra batteries and pen tips are shipped in the box with every pen tablet. If you don't have a spare battery or pen tips, then contact your local help desk or reseller, or feel free to contact FPC Customer Support.

If replacing the batteries and the pen tip does not correct the problem, then contact your local help desk or reseller for more help, or contact FPC Technical Support for additional assistance.

Why isn't the cursor directly under the pen?
It is normal for there to be a little bit of space between the pen and the cursor. However, if the cursor is very far awayfrom the pen (1/8 in or 4 mm), then you may need to recalibrate the pen. To recalibrate the pen:

  • In Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11, start the Windows Control Panel, open the "Calibrate" icon, and follow the instructions on the screen.
  • In Windows 95, start the Windows Control Panel, open the "Handwriter Settings" icon, select the "General" tab, and press the "Pen Calibration" button.
  • In Windows NT, start the Windows Control Panel, open the "Pen Calibration" icon, and follow the instructions on the screen.
  • In Windows CE, start the Windows Control Panel, open the "Stylus" icon, select the "Calibration" tab, and press the "Recalibrate" button.

If you're using a PCMCIA modem card, then the PCMCIA modem card and infrared ports are probably conflicting with each other. Use BIOS Setup to configure the infrared port to use COM2, and then run PCMSETUP to configure your PCMCIA modem to useCOM3. After making these changes, the error message should not appear.

If you don't know how to use the BIOS Setup menus or PCMSETUP, then contact your help desk, your reseller, or FPC Technical Support for assistance.

Yes. Fujitsu provides a DOS command-line BIOS setup program for each pen tablet. The command-line setup program is usually called PENSET.EXE or MFG.EXE where is a code that specifies the pen tablet on which the program can be used. For example the command-line setup programs for the Point 510 are MFG510.EXE and PENSET51.EXE See the Downloads Section for more information.

What is the difference between Standby and Suspend Mode?
In Standby Mode, the system is running in a reduced power state. The CPU is slowed down, the display backlight is turned off, the hard disk drive is spun down, and many of the system components, such as the video controller, are placed into their own internal standby mode.

In Suspend Mode, the system is turned off. The CPU is stopped, the display and video controller are shut off, the hard diskdrive is powered down, and the PCMCIA sockets are powered down. The only thing left powered in Suspend Mode is the systemRAM, so that data is not lost.

The system consumes less power in Suspend Mode than in Standby Mode.

What is describe here as "Suspend Mode" is called "Standby" by Windows 98, which can unfortunately lead to some confusion.

What is the difference between Suspend-to-RAM and Save-to-Disk?
In Save-to-Disk mode, all of the system configuration information and the data in system memory is stored on the hard disk and then system power is turned off completely. When the system resumes, the configuration and the contents of system memory are restored using the data saved on the hard disk drive. In Suspend-to-RAM, all data in system memory is stored to RAM rather than to disk, and power is supplied to the RAM to maintain the data.

Top of Page

The system will not resume from Suspend Mode. What's wrong?
The battery pack may be discharged or defective. Make sure the pen tablet has a charged battery and/or it is connected to an AC adapter.

The system may be at the critical thermal limit. To avoid damage to heat-sensitive components, the system is forced intoSuspend mode if it gets too hot. Try moving the unit to a cooler place and protect it from direct sunlight and hightemperatures.

Make sure that the on/off switch (if any) is switched on, and feel the suspend button to see if it is stuck.

If there is still a problem, please contact your local help desk, your reseller, or FPC Technical Support.

  • You can copy the installation files to a PCMCIA hard disk drive and then install the software from the hard drive.
  • You can install the software using a CD-ROM drive connected to the parallel port or the PC Card slot.
